The achievements of Kos Sports in developing ingenious new technology and products for the sports footwear industry have allowed them to compete in an industry dominated by some of the world’s largest multi-national companies. Kos Sports, through their X-blades brand have consciously pursued a philosophy to invest in research and development ahead of marketing, which has created an environment of consistent innovation and improvement.
Kos Sports exist because they have committed to continuing innovations, never content to rest on a single innovation, no matter how good, because of the competitive nature in the global industry. Bladed sole technology was originally developed in the 1980s and became a commercial reality in the early ‘90s. This technology brought the benefits of improved grip and important biomechanical attributes to reduce soft tissue injury. So successful was this technology that the multi-national competitors who initially ridiculed the concept have developed their own bladed products and the system is in use for 93% of all boots sold.
By cleverly continuing to build on their initial innovation Kos Sports were able to protect “blade angles” unique to the industry and develop the GTS and Bionic product lines designed specifically for the Australian market. X-blades are now one of the top four brands in Australian boot sales with an 11% market share and Kos Sports now distribute the product internationally.
